Transport Technologies Sector

Aerospace

The UK Aerospace Industry is the 'Jewel in the Crown' of UK manufacturing. Despite the events of 11th September and their effects on the commercial aerospace sector, the long-term outlook for aerospace is buoyant. Employing more than 150,000 people and exporting around 60 per cent of its output, the UK's aerospace industry is the second largest in the Western World and is responsible for 14% of the UK's total manufacturing research and development.

The Midlands is one of the four main clusters of aerospace and aviation companies in the country and the sector in Birmingham is a buoyant one. TRW Aeronautical Systems is set to provide the weapons bay door drive system for the Lockheed Joint Strike Fighter, and Hydrapower Dynamics has seen its annual turnover rise by £2 million and building work continue on an extension to its 42,000 sq. ft site.

If further proof were needed of the growth of the sector, Jane Pittaway, head of aerospace and defence at Birmingham law firm Wragge & Co has been instrumental in setting up a regional Aerospace and Defence Forum.
