Academic Excellence

Research & Development

Birmingham's international reputation as a centre of research and manufacturing is cemented through numerous academic and professional organisations, including the Aston and Birmingham's universities and associated science parks, to regional facilities such as QinetiQ and Warwick's university and science park. Birmingham has become a key force in the fields of nanotechnology and photonics, with the establishment of centres of research dedicated to developing these clusters. These include the I2 NanoTech Centre and the Midlands Photonics Cluster. Click here to view more detailed information.

The establishment of the Central Technology Belt will help create hi-tech 'clusters' attracting more investment and entrepreneurs keen to exploit the latest research. The Belt links the influential QinetiQ research centre and science park in Malvern, Worcestershire, with Birmingham and Aston Universities, and ultimately with the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. This is a key growth sector in terms of employment, with 1,800 workers. However, Birmingham and Solihull are very exposed to this sector, accounting for one-third of the region's employment.
