Life Sciences Sector

Overview

Over the past few decades the Life Sciences sector has emerged as one of the fastest growing industries within the global economy. By way of definition, Life Sciences refers to the scientific study of the living world as a whole – a combination of various disciplines including biology, zoology and botany with newer, more specialised areas of study, such as biosciences, biochemistry, biotechnology, bio-informatics, genetics, pharmaceutical studies, food science and technology and environmental science.

Located at the heart of the UK biotech market, Birmingham and indeed the West Midlands region is already home to a significant number of the biotech companies that exist within the country. And this should come as no surprise. Birmingham - as the capital of a region boasting nine universities, many with five star ratings for research; eight Science & Research Parks; world-renowned centres of excellence; a significantly lower cost of living but substantially higher quality of life - is the natural location for your business. With a realm of new advancements and inventions taking place within our city’s universities every day this is truly the place to be.

Birmingham’s growing Life Sciences cluster has received a further boost with the opening of the Aston Life Sciences Academy in 2005  and the inauguration of the Henry Wellcome Building - Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) in 2004. The Central Technology Belt further enhances the city’s potential to attract and develop high technology, high value-added businesses.

Locate in Birmingham is particularly keen to help existing City manufacturing companies discover new opportunities for growth within the medical sector. Businesses that are currently, for example, engineering specialists for the automotive industry, can with some investment, diversify their business towards the engineering of more value added medical devices. For those organisations prepared to accept the challenge of change there are potentially lucrative global marketplaces to be conquered.
