October 6 2009
Birmingham has emerged as Europe’s most improved city as a location to do business, according to an influential league table of European Cities.
The city rose seven places to reach 14th place in Cushman & Wakefield’s European Cities Monitor.
As well as boasting the biggest rise in rankings of 34 cities across Europe, the city has also risen in 11 of the 12 categories. The city was first for offering best value for money office space and secured top ten positions for ease of access to markets, availability of qualified staff, availability of office space and for having a network of external transport links.
Birmingham is now viewed as Europe’s fastest rising investment prospect by the international business community. With Deutsche Bank’s decision to base more than 650 staff here and Amey plc to make the city its international design hub, Birmingham really does mean business.
According to Michael Loftus, Head of Locate in Birmingham, the city never rests on its laurels. “By investing in its infrastructure, the redevelopment of New Street Station, and the extension of the runway at Birmingham Airport, we aim to provide the best environment for companies to grow."
Cushman & Wakefield has conducted a survey on Europe's major business cities since 1990.
Each year the survey provides an overview of the perceptions that corporate occupiers have about cities across Europe and their relative attractiveness. The annual report is based on interviews with executives in charge of location for 500 of Europe’s largest companies. The underlying data is researched independently for C&W by TNS.
In addition to the overall ranking of which 34 cities are considered the leading business locations, they are also ranked against a number of criteria such as transport links, telecommunications, access to markets, availability and quality of staff, cost of office space and quality of life.
