Hat-Trick of Michelin Stars for Birmingham

January 22 2009

Three of the city’s best chefs have been awarded coveted Michelin stars for their cooking.

The 2009 Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland includes Birmingham chefs Richard Turner for his new Harborne restaurant, Glynn Purnell for Purnell’s in the city centre, and Luke Tipping retains his star at Edgbaston’s Simpsons for the fifth year in a row.

The clutch of awards from the most respected food guide in the world is further proof of the city’s success as a culinary capital. Birmingham’s home-grown talent is thriving, with all the three Michelin chefs still living and working in the city.

No other city or town outside London boasts so many top ranking restaurants in the Guide, and Birmingham’s food and drink scene is quickly gaining national and international recognition. The Times newspaper calls the city ‘England’s second culinary capital.’
