March 13 2008
Birmingham and the West Midlands have topped a recent regeneration poll, with the region having more regeneration developments ongoing than any other area outside of London and the South East.
The survey, carried out by Regeneration and Renewal Magazine, showed the West Midlands to be ahead of similar UK regions in terms of regeneration development. The area currently has 14 regeneration schemes in the pipeline, worth an estimated £7.9bn of investment, compared with the South East and North West who each currently have 13 projects in the offing.
Birmingham came out as a regional leader, with as much as half of these developments being Birmingham based. Developments in the city counted in the survey include the £850m redevelopment of Selly Oak, the Longbridge project, estimated at around £640m and the greatly anticipated £575m Birmingham Gateway redevelopment of New Street Station.
The cluster of developments across the city is expected to create 930,000 sq ft of space and most are due for completion between now and spring 2009. Of this total, an estimated 700,000 sq ft will be top quality office space, making the city a prime location for businesses.
