This month sees work beginning on the development of the new Pebble Mill University Science Park. Located on the former BBC site in Edgbaston the 9 acre site will offer 36,000.sq.m. of new world class research and development facilities for the medical and healthcare industries.
Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands and the Central Technology Belt are working with Calthorpe Estates and the Universities and Hospitals on the new development.
Pebble Mill is one of the infrastructure developments under way in the Central Technology Belt - the high tech corridor running from Birmingham through to Malvern. Set up some three years ago the CTB, working through its partners, is dedicated to encouraging the growth of technology based industries and economic regeneration for the region.
The importance of Medical Technology The economy of this century will be one based on the application of intelligence and research. The significance of the so-called knowledge-based industries for Birmingham and the region cannot be overstated. Research indicates that it is in medicine and medical technologies that we have a specific opportunity. The international reputation of the University Medical School, the research capacity of the Institute for Cancer Studies, the University Hospital and its treatment specialisms have created a powerful partnership. Allied to this the population served by the region's hospitals, and the diversity of our population, provide a unique opportunity for the development and refinement of new treatments and procedures.
Science and Healthcare cluster Pebble Mill forms part of an extensive investment programme in South West Birmingham. The new Super Hospital is a £521m development that will have the most up to date facilities in Europe. Similar in size to the Bullring development it will bring more than 1000 new jobs and significant inward investment. In addition a new £60m Medipark is to be built adjacent to Heartlands Hospital.
Technology Transfer The University of Birmingham and Aston University are both located close to Pebble Mill and both offer world class research to enable spin outs or to work with existing companies on specific projects.
Pebble Mill will enable the scientific expertise within the Universities to interact with the medical and healthcare industries and so bring about real technology transfer and economic regeneration for the region.
