July 19 2004
Mills & Reeve is more than doubling its Birmingham office space by relocating to 84 Colmore Row, in the centre of the city's business district. The firm is taking 20,000 square feet of the site and will move from its current office at 54 Hagley Road in early 2005.
Mills & Reeve will occupy three floors of the five storey classic Edwardian building formerly occupied by Chesterton, which will still retain space on one floor. Mills & Reeve will remain at its Hagley Road site until the move which is currently planned to take place in January 2005.
Mark Jeffries, Mills & Reeve's managing partner said, 'The Birmingham office has enjoyed significant growth and expansion which has made a substantial contribution to the success of the firm as a whole. Lateral hires, internal partner promotions and the efforts of all of our staff combined with new client wins and panel appointments means we have rapidly outgrown our site on Hagley Road. It will be hugely beneficial for us as well as for our current and future clients to be in the centre of the business district.'
Mills & Reeve has been at its Hagley Road site for nearly three years during which time its staff has increased by from 79 to 103. The number of partners has increased to eleven boosted by a series of high profile lateral hires and promotions. Nationally the law firm boasts 68 partners, 250 lawyers and a total of over 500 staff and has recently been listed in The Sunday Times Top 100 Best Companies to work for and has also been recognized as one of the country's top employers by the Corporate Research Foundation.
In May 2004 the Private Client group was further expanded by Matthew Hansell who joined from Martineau Johnson. The Healthcare group has continued to grow its practice following the appointment of barrister David Lock in October 2003. The Corporate group was launched in February 2003 following the appointment of Tim Winn from Garretts. Peter Manford then joined the team in July 2003 from Eversheds. This followed the appointment in January 2003 of another former Eversheds partner, Mike O'Sullivan, who joined the Real Estate group. In June 2004, the firm promoted Nick Abbott and Martin Brewer to the partnership. Both specialise in employment law with Nick focusing on the education sector and Martin concentrating on the commercial market.
Simon Quantrill, partner with Knight Frank who managed the letting on behalf of Mills & Reeve, commented: 'Colmore Row is still the most recognised business addresses in Birmingham city centre and Mills and Reeve's relocation is a significant step in the life of the firm.'
The new offices will be refurbished to include state of the art technology such as DECT phones. Employees will be free from a deskbound phone but are still instantly contactable by a cordless handset which uses radio technology to access the fixed standard telephone network. There will also be an AV integration wall and plasma video conferencing facilities.
