Health Care

Health care in Birmingham is due to change radically. Revolutionary concepts such as ambulatory care, and a convenient fast-track hospital treatment centre are now a reality, and hospitals in Birmingham are set to be at the forefront of these developments.

  • Birmingham's hospitals have a reputation for excellence and quality care. A recent Government review rated University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs both Selly Oak and The Queen Elizabeth hospitals, the best performing Trust in the Midlands and one of the top 20 in the country.
  • Heart of England Foundation Trust provides patient care from four sites- Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Solihull Hospital, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, and Birmingham Chest Clinic. It is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving a community of more than one million people. With 10,000 members of staff, it was one of only 19 Trusts in the UK to receive a rating of both 'excellent' for both quality of services and use of resources by the Healthcare Commission in 2007.
  • Construction works are currently underway to build a new £545 million new super hospital on the Queen Elizabeth site.  This will replace the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak hospitals. The new hospital is set to include 1213 beds and will house the largest critical care unit in Europe.  Over 40% of all in-patient beds will be in single rooms and all in-patient bedrooms will have ensuite bathrooms.

Additional facilities will include:

  • New premises for the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (currently located in Selly Oak hospital) within the acute hospital, in partnership with the Ministry of Defence, providing specialist care for the armed forces.
  • A new Clinical Science Centre within the acute hospital, in partnership with the University of Birmingham.

By the time the hospital is fully completed in 2011, Birmingham will have an internationally recognised centre of excellence providing modern and dependable acute adult healthcare and integrated mental health services. It will be a focus for world class education, training and research.

  • The £30 million Ambulatory Care Centre at Birmingham City Hospital is now a flagship "walk in" hospital offering fast-track treatment and diagnosis without patients having to stay overnight in hospital. The hospital includes outpatient clinics, dedicated cancer centre, six operating theatres; and a kidney dialysis unit and was completed at the end of 2005.

  • Good Hope Hospital Ambulatory Care Centre is also a fast track treatment centre providing diagnosis and non-emergency surgery. It enables the provision of faster and smoother access for patients awaiting routine surgery, together with extended opening hours. Completed in 2005.
