The total student population is in excess of 166,000 within the nine West Midlands universities. 37% of these students are enrolled at the three universities in Birmingham alone.

Around 35% of the region's young people now go to university, with many remaining locally to study

There were a total of over 20,000 graduates for the academic year 2007/2008 within the three universities in Birmingham.

Within the nine universities in the West Midlands, there were a total of over 50,000 graduates for the same academic year.

A 5 year £3.5 million initiative is currently running, aimed at attracting and retaining graduates to the region has been launched and is being led by Aston University. The project involves a number of key local universities and will focus primarily on the following clusters:

  • Transport technologies
  • Specialist business and promotional services
  • Information and communication technologies
  • Medical technologies

Skill Levels

In Birmingham 37.9% of the workforce is qualified to NVQ 3 level and above, while those in employment with NVQ 4 level qualification and above is 22%.
