Schools in Birmingham
The Education Department maintains 455 schools, accommodating 177,770 pupils; Birmingham itself is home to over 500 schools. During 2008, 98% of pupils at year 11 gained one or more GCSE's.
Exam results showing further improvements. The percentage of pupils achieving 5 GCSE’s at A*-C in 2008 is now 66%. This performance is the highest of the core city and statistical neighbour authorities. There have also been improvements in the percentage of pupils achieving 5A*-C including English and mathematics in 2008. These results are above the average for the core city and statistical neighbour authorities.
In the national annual school performance league tables for A level results, five Birmingham schools are ranked inside the top twenty for 2008. This includes King Edward VI High School for Girls in Birmingham, ranked at the number three position. In 2008, Birmingham schools achieved a 84% pass rate at grades A-C for one or more at GCE A level.
The West Midlands area has a selection of the best independent schools in the country, including the schools of King Edward VI Foundation in Birmingham. Senior and junior, boarding and day, co-educational and single sex, academically selective and all-ability - whatever the criteria, there is an independent school to meet that need.
