The Education Department maintains 455 schools, accommodating 177,770 pupils; Birmingham itself is home to over 500 schools. During 2007, 98% of pupils at year 11 gained one or more GCSE's.
In the national annual school performance league tables for A level results for 2007, two Birmingham schools are currently ranked inside the top 10. Over the past 5 years, Birmingham's improvement rate at GCSE/GNVQ level for 5 or more A-C grades has been significantly higher than the national average. Also in 2007, Birmingham schools achieved a 62% pass rate at grades A-C for 5 or more GCSE/GNVQs - an increase of more that 2% over the previous year.
The schools of King Edward VI in Birmingham regularly feature among the top ten in the whole of the country on the basis of academic distinction.
